Katelyn, Melissa, Noelle, Megan, Brittney, Alexandra, Anna, and Emily are graduate students in the Occupational Therapy Department at Quinnipiac University. This research was completed as part of a capstone experience in collaboration with a Quinnipiac School of Health Sciences Grant received by Elizabeth, Barbara Nadeau, and Salvador Bondoc.
Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:
- Participants will be able to understand and recognize lingering symptoms in students with history of concussion and the potential impact on quality of life.
- Participants will understand how lingering impairments of concussion interfere with students ability to successfully participate in academic and campus life.
- Participants will understand coping strategies commonly employed by students to successfully integrate into academic life post concussion.
Summary of Event:
A concussion can cause acute changes in functioning including headache, visual disturbance, dizziness, emotional changes, and cognitive slowing. These symptoms, whether resolving in days to weeks or persisting for months, can greatly disrupt academic life causing disengagement or poor performance. Research explored the perception of students with documented history of concussion on quality of life, performance in academics, and coping strategies employed to sustain involvement in campus life.
