Bio/Background of the Speaker:

Tessa is an occupational scientist and occupational therapist with experience in mental health throughout the lifespan and across the continuum of care. She works for the Yale University School of Medicine on the Young Adult Services team at the Connecticut Mental Health Center. In addition to her clinical role, Tessa is a Member for Professional Development with ConnOTA, an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford, and a PhD student at Towson University, studying citizenship, community participation, and inclusion for people with mental illness.

Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:

Through this presentation and facilitated discussion, participants will:

1.      Define non-sanctioned occupations.

2.      Critique understandings of participation and meaning for people with mental illness.

3.      Identify strategies to address non-sanctioned occupations in OT practice.

Summary of Event:

OTPs are skilled in addressing participation to promote health and well-being. However, many people engage in meaningful activities that may be considered deviant or unhealthy and are less understood by health care professionals. This presentation will share current perspectives on these “non-sanctioned occupations” and the implications for people with mental illness. Participants will discuss strategies to address non-sanctioned occupations to support inclusive and holistic service provision.
