Summary of Event:

Title:  Incontinence and the Older Adult

According to the National Association for Continence, urinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary or unwanted loss of urine. This loss can be a few drops or large amounts soaking through multiple layers of clothing. UI is common in adults over age 65, but this is not considered a normal part of aging. Some adults experience muscle weakness, decreased cognitive skills, and limitations in mobility and this can result in unwanted urine loss. It’s imperative that occupational therapists evaluate all areas of concern to determine the root cause of the urine loss. In this session, attendees will learn that not all urine loss is fixed by Kegel exercises. Using appropriate questionnaires and outcomes measures, as well as a variety of lifestyle and behavioral interventions, clients can reduce UI and re-engage in their meaningful occupations.

Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:

After attending this educational session, attendees will be able to:

  1. Articulate the expected and unexpected age-related changes in the genitourinary system.
  2. Select appropriate questionnaires and/or assessment tools to gather client-centered information about their client’s daily impact from incontinence.
  3. Provide education to the client and caregiver(s) on toileting schedules, food and dietary considerations, pelvic floor exercises, and accurate bladder diary recording
