Summary of Event: Title: Introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in Occupational Therapy Practice
Presenters: Michele Stillman OTD, OTR/L, RN Lola Halperin, EdD, OTR/L
Bio/Background of the Speaker: Dr. Michele Stillman is the Occupational Therapy Supervisor at Capitol Region Mental Health Center - Young Adult Services. She has provided occupational therapy assessment and intervention, develops programming and oversees occupational therapy services and recreational therapy at CRMHC since 2012. She completed Dialectical Behavior Therapy – Foundational Training through Behavioral Tech – a Linehan Institute Training company in 2020. She currently co-facilitates a DBT group at CRMHC. Dr. Stillman is a 1995 graduate of Quinnipiac College’s Occupational Therapy program and a 2021 graduate of American International College, earning her Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate. For the past 30 years, she has been an occupational therapist in SNF’s, short-term rehabilitation, school-based practice, home health care, administration, health and academia. Dr. Lola Halperin is an Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy at Sacred Heart University, where she designs, teaches, and coordinates the mental health curriculum at her school. Dr. Halperin earned her Bachelor's in OT from Tel Aviv University, Israel, and her Master of Arts degree from NYU. She then completed her doctoral studies at Columbia University. Dr. Halperin has served children, adolescents, and adults affected by mental health conditions and other forms of adversity in inpatient, outpatient, and community-based facilities in the United States, Canada, and Israel. Her current teaching, student mentorship, and research projects center on serving clients with mental illness, trauma, and chronic pain. Dr. Halperin discovered CBT while working as an OT in a psychiatric hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, in the late 1990s. A few years later, she trained in DBT while employed at NY Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Halperin became certified in DBT through the Psychotherapy Networker in 2022.
