Summary of Event:

Title: Promoting Success in Community-based Mental Health Settings

Community-based mental health settings can be challenging and unpredictable, yet these settings provide a wonderful opportunity to evaluate, support, and work with clients at their baseline while helping them navigate real-life community settings. We will discuss strategies to use TUOS and motivational techniques to engage clients and encourage them to be active partners in their mental health recovery journey.

Presenters:

Sylvia Sobocinski, MA, OTR/L

Bio/Background of the Speaker:

Sylvia Sobocinski currently works as an adjunct faculty member in the Occupational Therapy Department at Sacred Heart University. She spent 10 years working on the outpatient rehab team at Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) in New Haven. During that time, in addition to providing programming at the center she met with clients at homeless shelters, Fellowship clubhouse in New Haven, day programs in the community, supported housing, elderly housing units, YMCA, and their apartments. She also spent 2 years as a member of the facility’s Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACT) outreaching to clients with serious mental illness who traditionally have difficulty accessing services at the Center.

Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:

Through this presentation and facilitated discussion, participants will:

  1. Gain an understanding of the challenges and benefits of community-based practice
