Summary of Event:

Title: The Throne Zone: OT Tips for a Safer and Dignified Toileting of Larger-Bodies Adults

Occupational therapy practitioners play a vital role in supporting safe, dignified, and independent toileting for clients of all body sizes. This presentation provides practical, evidence-informed strategies to address the unique needs of larger-bodied individuals in bathroom environments. Participants will learn how to optimize client positioning on the toilet to enhance safety, comfort, and independence with toileting. The presentation will also explore common environmental barriers and offer actionable recommendations for modifying the toilet space to better support toileting tasks. Additionally, learners will become familiar with assistive devices and durable medical equipment designed to facilitate toileting for larger bodied people, empowering practitioners to make confident, client-centered recommendations.

Facilitator and Speaker:

Facilitator: Susan Giannitti, OTR/L

Speaker: Maria Lindbergh, MOT, OTR/L, ECHM

Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1) Optimize client position of larger bodied individuals on the toilet for improved safety and independence with toileting tasks.
2) Identify 3 environmental changes to the toilet or the area surrounding the toilet for increased toileting independence.
3) Recognize two forms of assistive devices or durable medical equipment used to help larger-bodied people with toileting.
