Title: Destigmatizing Mental Illness, Demystifying Bipolar Summary of Event: Join Stephen Nawotniak as he shares his powerful journey from hospitalized patient to occupational therapist, offering an honest look at what bipolar symptoms feel like from the inside. Stephen introduces the Acceptance Ladder and the WRAP model as practical and compassionate tools for self-discovery, resilience, and personal growth. Speaker(s): Stephen Nawotniak, OTR/L, NYCPS, CPRP Bio/Background of the Speaker(s): Stephen Nawotniak, OTR/L, CPRP, NYCPS, is a dynamic keynote speaker, author, and occupational therapist with a background in mental health. He combines his professional expertise as a licensed healthcare professional and his personal journey with a bipolar condition to demystify mental illness and inspire audiences worldwide. Stephen’s journey is anything but conventional. Starting in May of 2000, Steve hiked, biked, sailed, and canoed for 8 months, traveling from Buffalo, NY to Key West, FL. Along the way he gave presentations to over 1000 youth on the values of volunteerism and education and completed over 230 hours of community service as part of his self-designed master’s degree through Buffalo State University. Steve is a Mom’s Choice Award-winning children’s book author. Through the Mubu the Morph children’s book series, he inspires children to embrace change, believe in themselves, and discover their unique potential. His other books, Handbook for Healthy Living with a Mood Disorderand Bipolar Life Hacks: Keys to Loving Life with a Bipolar Disorder, provide practical strategies to help individuals with mood disorders navigate life with confidence and fulfillment. His work uplifts and motivates readers of all ages to pursue personal growth and resilience. With vulnerability and authenticity, Stephen shares his professional experience and personal journey with bipolar disorder to break down the stigma around mental illness and advocate for the improvement of mental health care. Whether speaking to healthcare professionals, educators, or individuals seeking inspiration, he delivers actionable strategies and heartfelt motivation that leave a lasting impact. Learning Objectives: 1) At the end of this session, attendees will be able to describe three experiences of bipolar disorder from a first-person and clinical lens. 2) At the end of this session, attendees will be able to list the five steps of The Acceptance Ladder to help clients (and practitioners) transform difficult experiences into personal action. 3) At the end of this session, attendees will be able to list the seven components of the Wellness Recovery Action Plan and their value for clients and their own mental wellness. |
