April 21, 2026 - Perspectives in Aging Community of Practice Register to join us HERE! Members - FREE Virtual Meeting 7:00 pm Summary of Event: Title: How to Respond to a Client Asking About Driving... It's Part of Our Practice!! As we see in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework it is without our scope of practice to address a patient’s goal to drive after an illness/injury. There are many foundation skills needed for driving that are also needed for daily skills and independence with functioning. For some individuals a medical condition has limited their access to learning to drive. Occupational therapy may be a resource to assist these patients with finding a new freedom with interventions related to community mobility and even driving. Having the right resources, competencies and proper documentation enables practitioners with determining fitness and potential to drive. Facilitator and Speaker: Facilitator: Susan Giannitti, OTR/L Speaker: Joan Sevigny Cramer, MS, OT/L, CDRS, CDI Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve: At the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Define state criteria for operating a motor vehicle and driving rehabilitation. 2. Address the IADL of driving in Occupational Therapy sessions. 3. Select objective assessments for clinical intervention vs behind the wheel skills. 4. Access AOTA Practice Statement for “Driving and Community Mobility in Occupational therapy Practice”; OT Drive resource. 5. Address driving in the traditional clinic. 6. Make referrals to a specialist for competency with behind the wheel.
Bio/Background of the Speakers: ConnOTA community of practice-perspectives in aging members are OT practioners who work with older adults, have worked with older adults, or who are seeking to work with this population.
