Bio/Background of the Speakers:

ConnOTA community of practice members are OT practitioners who are actively working in home care, who have worked in home care, or are seeking to work in home care.  Members bring their expertise and skillset as well as questions and a strong desire to use social learning theory to learn, share, and pool knowledge.

Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:

This hour-long presentation and discussion will allow participants to:

Discuss the implications of grip strength and how it connects to health indicators. We will look at related documented work and its’ efficacy to the request for OTPs to document grip strength, to what end? Do OTs have dynamometers in their bags? Which ones? Suggested readings to follow.

Summary of Event:

Intrigued by a recent post in AOTA General Forum discussions prompted this topic: “one of the pieces to help determine if someone has malnutrition is "reduced muscle mass." …and have requested for the OT Department to obtain grip strengths and document if it is less than what is expected given the person's age etc. I feel this is misuse of this testing instrument and I do not support this; however, I am getting a lot of pressure to incorporate this as standard practice. I was hoping to get some feedback and thoughts to what other facilities are doing? Is this the practice?”

This event is sponsored by Connecticut occupational therapy practitioners. ConnOTA is supporting this event by overseeing the award of CEUs for registered participants.
