Speaker: Heidi Bzdyra COTA

Bio/Background of the Speakers:

ConnOTA community of practice members are OT practitioners who are actively working in home care, who have worked in home care, or are seeking to work in home care.  Members bring their expertise and skillset as well as questions and a strong desire to use social learning theory to learn, share, and pool knowledge.

Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:

This hour-long presentation and discussion will allow participants to:

  1. Increase your understanding of how aging and end of life has been medicalized.
  2. Learn four questions that can help determine what is meaningful to your clients and help you to direct their treatment choices.
  3. Identify and discuss the “hard conversations” OT practitioners in home care might need to have with their clients.
  4. Increase your knowledge of the physical aging process, how attitudes towards aging have changed, the evolution of care/housing options for the frail elderly and research findings on the priorities of the elderly.
  5. Discuss modifications/adaptations/interventions used in home care practice to strike a balance between a “safe life” and a “meaningful life” for clients.

Summary of Event:

One of our members Heidi Bzdyra has put together a book review presentation on: What We Can Learn as Occupational Therapy practitioners from the book “Being Mortal—Medicine and What Matters in the End” by Atul Gawande 2014. It would be helpful if you have read the book but not mandatory.

This event is sponsored by Connecticut occupational therapy practitioners. ConnOTA is supporting this event by overseeing the award of CEUs for registered participants.
