Bio/Background of the Speakers:

ConnOTA community of practice members are OT practitioners who are actively working in home care, who have worked in home care, or are seeking to work in home care.  Members bring their expertise and skillset as well as questions and a strong desire to use social learning theory to learn, share, and pool knowledge.

Learning Objectives Attendees Should Achieve:

This hour-long presentation and discussion will allow participants to understand:

1. Examine the role of occupational therapy in wound management per AOTA position paper.
2. Determine risk factors of pressure injuries.
3. Understand the importance of skin assessment and staging.
4. Know common pressure points when seated in a w/c and seating strategies.

Summary of Event: 

 Susanne recently attended a course on “Understanding and Early Detection of Pressure Related Seating Injuries” which she will share information from. There have also been recent inquiries on AOTA Forum regarding wound care and specialties. We will discuss and examine the “medical necessity” paperwork for obtaining customized seating systems for patients who require such chairs. If patients are not eligible, we will share what are some cushions that will aid in the reduction of pressure while seated.
