Summary of Event: “Crip Camp” and the Disabilities Rights Movement We will be discussing the 2020 documentary “Crip Camp” which can be viewed on Netflix or YouTube prior to this meeting. How did a “band” of disabled teenagers from Camp Jenet in 1971 go on to be the disability rights advocates? We will see how in 1973 Section 504 provided limited protection but further legislation to ban discrimination and provide access to buildings and services etc. was needed. It took 18 more years (1990) to pass The Americans with Disabilities Act. We will listen to and discuss the TED Talk with Judy Heumann on “Our Fight for Disability Rights and Why We Are Not Done Yet”.
This event is sponsored by Connecticut occupational therapy practitioners. ConnOTA is supporting this event by overseeing the award of CEUs for registered participants. |
